Jason LaTurner, PhD, is leading a Region 9 Comprehensive Center project with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to support implementation and continuous improvement of IL-EMPOWER 2.0. Having worked with numerous districts and state agencies during times of transition, he brings his experience in change management and continuous improvement processes to the team. Having grown up in western Illinois and recently returning to the Midwest after 25 years in Texas, he is keen on supporting the system—ISBE—in which he got his start.
Previously, Dr. LaTurner was the director of the Texas Comprehensive Center from 2016 to 2019. He led the development of state work plans, supervised the work of the state liaison to vet requests, and ensured high-quality technical assistance was provided. Dr. LaTurner provided oversight and mentoring for the following projects: principal and educator evaluation and systems of support, educator preparation program evaluation, educator equity plan development, and student learning objectives pilot. He also supported numerous state education agencies through dozens of projects when he served as the deputy director of the State Support Network and the Regional Educational Laboratory Southwest. LaTurner has a PhD in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.
